Senna is most commonly used as a laxative to relieve constipation

Senna is an herb derived from several different flowering varieties of the cinnamon plant. The leaves, flowers, and fruits of the senna plant have been used for centuries as a laxative or stimulant in tea.
The leaves of the senna plant are also used in some teas to relieve constipation or promote weight loss.
The most commonly used cassia plants are C. acutifolia and C. angustifolia which grow in the Middle East and India.
Senna is most commonly used as a laxative to relieve constipation or, in some cases, for weight loss. It is also an ingredient in some traditional over-the-counter laxatives.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved senna as an over-the-counter remedy for constipation. The most common doses:
There have been case reports of liver damage, coma, or nerve damage following senna consumption. In these cases, people have used senna at doses much higher than recommended and for longer periods of time.
Senna may or may not be safe to use during pregnancy. Pregnant women suffering from constipation should consult their doctor before using senna or any other laxative.
Senna is safe for breastfeeding women when used in the recommended amounts. Although a small amount of the herb passes into breast milk, it does not appear to have any effect on a nursing infant’s stool.
Long-term use of senna can lead to dependence, accompanied by defecation, stabbing pain (often reversible), rectal bleeding, and weight loss.
People who experience any of these side effects should talk to their doctor, especially if they don’t go away.
It is important to drink plenty of fluids or an electrolyte replacement solution such as Gatorade while taking senna. This is to ensure that the person does not lose too much fluid or electrolytes, especially if they have diarrhea.
There are several drug interactions to be aware of. Knowing this, people can be sure that they drink senna tea safely.
Senna is generally well tolerated and considered safe for most people. However, it can cause serious complications in some people with certain medical conditions and certain medications.
