Everything you need to know about houttuynia cordata

K-Beauty’s innovation never ceases to amaze us. In addition to developing clever solutions and simple techniques, Korean beauty brands also introduced us to some game-changing skin care ingredients, including snail mucin, propolis and bamboo.
The latest trending ingredient on top of the K-Beauty 2021 trend forecast? According to Dr. Michele Koo, a plastic surgeon certified by the board, the heart leaf (scientifically known as Houttuynia cordata) is a flavonoid and flowering plant native to Southeast Asia.
“In Southeast Asia, houttuynia cordata is eaten as a leafy vegetable with antioxidant, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties,” explained Dr. Gu. “It’s skin care potential has been boosted due to its anti-inflammatory (think blemishes, rashes, eczema) and moisturizing properties.”
But this is only the beginning. Therefore, we invited Dr. Koo (and some other skin care experts) to share all the ins and outs of this ingredient and some simple ways to introduce it into your daily work.
According to a study published in Pharmacognosy Review in 2014, the heart leaf is traditionally used for medicinal purposes in northeastern India and China. Consume raw leaves and plant extracts to purify the blood and relieve inflammation in the body.
However, it is worth noting that the heart leaf can also be used locally. A study published in Jeonnam Medical Journal in 2010 showed that this plant can treat snake bites, as well as skin diseases such as acne and atopic dermatitis.
“This plant has been shown to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties,” said Dr. Gu. “However, whether this will translate into smoothing rough, angry, and variable skin (or removing blemishes) is still unknown,” she pointed out, citing the need for additional research. In other words, don’t treat it as a panacea for the time being.
Dr. Koo explained that sensitive and dry skin types are most suitable for products containing heart leaf because the ingredient is a moisturizer, which means it is moisturizing and has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.
New York City dermatologist Debra Jaliman, MD, warned that some people with extremely sensitive skin may experience adverse reactions when using products containing heart lobes. This is why she recommends doing a patch test on your arm first to see how your skin reacts. “Some people feel tingling with this ingredient,” Dr. Jarriman explained. “If you have very red skin, rosacea or severe eczema, you may want to avoid it.”
In addition, Dr. Lavanya Krishnan, a dermatologist certified by the board of directors, recommends that if you are allergic to sulfa drugs (drugs used to treat bacterial infections), do not use heart leaf products.
Dr. Koo said that because of its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, the heart leaf is often added to skin care products such as masks, toners and creams. Dr. Krishnan added that due to its antibacterial properties, it can be a useful ingredient in acne products for sensitive skin.
But before adding some products containing heart leaves to your shopping cart, Dr. Koo recommends to keep in mind that the extraction process of the plant may vary from brand to brand, which may affect the quality of the products you use.
“It is very important to choose products from brands whose production process is very transparent and to adhere to higher standards,” she said. “Sometimes the extraction method contains residual toxic ingredients, which may actually be harmful. Make sure you trust the product line to provide clean, pure and healthy ingredients.”
